Tips to Spot Healthy Birds - Part 1

22/10/2010 Comb: A red comb is a sign of good health; young pullets can have pale faces so combs should at least be pink. Some breeds do not naturally have a red comb though so do your research before going to view. A pale comb on an adult bird can point to anaemia, which may be caused red mite. These tiny bugs are grey but turn red after a “feed” of blood form your hens. This usually happens after dark when birds are roosting.

A blue/purple comb indicates a lack of oxygen in the blood stream, which points to heart failure or respiratory disease.

 Eyes: Should be bright and alert with no discharge. If both eyes are affected with discharge then this can point to mycoplasma. If discharge is only present in one eye then there may be damage to it, which has caused an ulcer. This may need antibiotic drops form your vets.

 Beak: Beaks that are overgrown or twisted may need regular clipping and can cause difficulty eating.

 Nostrils: Check for discharge and/or sneezing. This could point to an upper respiratory infections.
