General Rabbit Checks

27/10/2010 Nails

Take time to look at your rabbits nails. If he is always kept on soft bedding in his hutch and his run is situated on grass this will mean there will be little if no wear to the claws, only if he likes to dig in his run! For bunnies that are kept in a two tier hutch with a hard concrete base underneath this will help to naturally file the rabbits nails.

If they do require cutting then you can take them along to your vet who will be happy to do this for you or its easy to learn how to do this by yourself. Make sure you use a good pair of nail clippers, these can be the type used for dogs or humans. Tuck the rabbit under your arm and examine the nail, the blood vessel is easily seen so just cut off the dead end. Turn the rabbit over, still holding it firmly under your arm and trim the back nails.

Feet

The fur on a rabbits feet should be thick like pile carpet. Its especially important in the short coated rabbits such as the Rex breed to use soft woodshavings of a good depth in the rabbits house.

With a combination of good husbandry and good breeding this had practically eliminated this problem. Claws should be clean and sharp like needles but they will get blunter on an older rabbit. Long uncared for nails can cause the rabbit difficulty in getting about.
